Designing Our Cars
Designing Our Cars
Before we manufacture our race vehicles we go through a complex design process to ensure our cars are truely incredible. Below is a basic outline of the process.
Sketchwork and Rough Planning
To plan out our final car we first doodle out some ideas and develop early concept work. John sketches out ideas, with contributions from all the Team members and we design initial cars.
This stage is essential to deciding the form of our final car and to experiment with design ideas. We all have our little ideas and flashes of inspiration and sketching lets us get these ideas on paper.
(We will add some pics herewhen we next get our hands on someones digital camera).
Computer Aided Design (CAD)
After deciding the rough form of our final car we use CAD software packages such as ProDesktop and Solid Edge to create a computer 3D version of our car. Harry is the main CAD Designer and uses his knowledge to develop a fully 3D fusion of our ideas. All our knowledge acquired through research is utilised to create the fastest vehicle possible.
Harry begins by uploading the standard design base for our cars. This is a basic shaped 3D block. (See right)
He chops it in half and then uses a spline cut to create a shape like the one on the left.
He then cuts from the side and top to create a shape similar to the one on the right.
He then rounds the car's sharp edges and mirrors it to create a finished body like the one on the left.
This is the final design stage and this is where our creation begins to take shape. We develop several CAD designs and then use specialist Virtual Wind Tunnel software to test and compare the performance of the designs. As a team we decide which design shows the most potential and develop our final car...
